  • How much wood is a face cord?

    Generally, a face cord is a single stack of firewood that measures 4 feet high by 8 feet long- approximately 200 pieces If you prefer to think in pick up sized- a face cord fills up the back of a regular sized pick up (tossed in not stacked)

  • What type of wood is considered a good wood to burn indoors?

    You want to stick to a good hardwood like what you can get from us at Rock County Firewood. A good ash, oak or burch is a clean wood to burn and it usually burns hotter.

  • Why should I avoid burning a soft wood like pine in my indoor fireplace?

    Pine often dries out fast and seems easy to burn- but, it generates a lot of tar and creosote. The problem with this is that it doesn't burn hot enough to carry it out of the chimney flue. If this builds up- it can easily cause a chimney fire.

  • What is seasoned firewood?

    At Rock County Firewood we split our firewood a year after it has been cut. This is what it means to be a seasoned firewood. The benefit of seasoned wood is that when properly seasoned the wood will produce more heat and less creosote.

  • Should I cover my firewood?

    It is never ideal to burn wet firewood. If you the ability to store your wood in a basement, shed or garage that is ideal. However, most people do not have that kind of space. So, store your wood outdoors and potentially cover it with a tarp. However, do not cover your wood on all sides as airflow is required to dry out wood and prevent mold and rot.

  • What is the best way to stack my firewood?

    We recommend keeping your firewood from sitting directly on the ground so that you can prevent moisture from the ground from entering the wood. Stacking firewood on a pallet is a good solution.

  • Is it ok to stack my firewood against my house?

    Stacked firewood may provide shelter to some furry friends or rodents. It’s a good idea to stack your firewood a little ways away from your home to prevent unwanted guests.

  • Is it ok to use your firewood for cooking?

    Yes ,our firewood is a mix of hardwoods and it burns clean. We also do not use equipment that has grease or oils on it that would transfer over to your wood during the cutting process.
